Open Thread: Worst Ever Luton Players

Righty ho – having done the best and the most influential loanees, time for the ‘line up of shame’.

Now – I’m sure all players who pull on the Luton shirt give it their all, ahem, but here’s your chance to list the ones you felt didn’t quite cut the mustard.

My starter for ten…Richard Jackson, Alan Goodall, Robbie Winters. There’s plenty more where that came from.

Any others???

…what a terrible era. Incredible to think that all of those played for us when we were TWO DIVISIONS HIGHER than we are now!

    • I should make that clear – I mean Mark Stein’s second spell when Ricky Hill signed him. Even then that’s probably a bit harsh…ignore that one. The others though…Goodness me they were bad.

  2. The huge figure of MICKY DROY came on loan from Chelsea in 1984, aged 33 and weighing several tons, and made Ian Roper look like Bambi. Droy played twice at centre-half, before (thank Christ) we signed Steve Foster and all was well again ….

  3. Alan Goodall (defo)
Sam Parkin (a target man who can’t head or control the ball, or score – brilliant!)
Shane Blackett (head like a triangle, he will cost us again this season if he plays)
Adam Newton (a winger who can’t control the ball)

  4. Ah, most of these are far too modern.

Last week I mentioned Gordon Riddick, who played in the mid 60s as a striker. Rumour had it that he only got in the team because his dad was one of the groundsmen ( such things did used to happen) but I never believed this. As for his “strikes”, I seem to remember them often being memebers of the crowd, so wild was his shooting. When he moved to Gillingham, everyone was delighted.

Also around that time was dear old Gordon Turner, who should have hung his boots up around 1962, but like the legendary Stanley Matthews, just couldn’t let go. I saw Matthews play against us in his dotage when he was still turning out for Stoke. He was rubbish and the Kenny crowd let him know it. A sad way to end a career.

Around the glory days of 67-70, the services of a certain Freddie Jardine were occasionally called upon, usually when injury deprived us of a decent full back. Fred spent 10 years with the club, and only made regular appearances during the 5 season slide from 1st to 4th. How he managed to stay on the payroll that long is a mystery.

John Reid was an inside forward in the 67 season, held a regular place but never seemed to score (although I suppose he muct have). Replaced by the follicularly challenged Ian Buxton who also played cricket for Derbyshire. He wasn’t much better either.

Someone mentioned Rob Johnson earlier. I disagree. The bionic man played above himself in the LC final.

Maybe there is confusion between him and Marvin Johnson (no relation whatsoever, or if there was, Mrs Johnson has some answering to do). MJ never cut the mustard, in my view.

Can’t get to matches any more because I live so far away, but still listen in on 3 Counties. Why have I got the impression that Andrew Fotiades wasn’t much cop?

And surely some of Nico’s performances last season have to make him a contender. But perhaps it would be fairer to blame the manager that kept on selecting him. Sorry Mick, but you did.

and the majority of Blackwell’s other charlatan signings.

Already in the financial mire, and that rocket Blackwell sign a bunch of overpaid fuds that were well past their best – negligent prick.

I can think of others that were just money grabbing gits, but I don’t want to get myself more riled than I already am, so I shall leave it there.

  7. Can’t believe Gavin McGowan hasn’t got a mention. The only player to be running down the left wing and cross right footed straight into row Z of the main stand. Oldham away (late 90’s)

  8. I can not believe no one has said Dean Morgan. His name still makes me so angry.

Also I thought Darren McDonough had a particular lack of ability

    • Neil

I agree with Darren McDoughnut, no ability, but at least he ran around and kicked the opposition. As for Deano, I would say that he has some ability, but he thinks that he is better than he is, and was particularly lazy.

Others that spring to mind are Ian Benjamin and (super) Johnny Taylor. Though super Johnny was decent in his first season, I think he went about 22 games without scoring in his 2nd season.

Matt mentioned Peter Thomson – wasn’t he announced as a target man that can play with both feet, which usually translates to a big donkey that can play with neither.

      Like

    • The thing about Darren McDonough is that in partnership with John Dreyer they let precious few goals in for half a season or so. Then I seem to remember he got injured and wasn’t the same again.

Or is my memory playing tricks on me?

My worst player > I agree with many who cite Ricky Hills management period as being a particular low, and any number of the players from this time could be selected, but i’d go for Peter Thompson. All I can remember he jumped like a salmon, really bizarre, and couldn’t score. Did okay in the non league thereafter, says it all > why did we buy him when we were in League 1?

  9. Ron’s hard drive has finally remembered the name of Luton Town’s worst ever player. His name was Billy McDermott, and he played full back around 1967, sometimes with the aforementioned F Jardine. Fortunately we had Tony Read in goal and Terry Branston at centre half to mitigate the damage. Even though we swept our way through division 4 and scored (I believe) 102 goals, we still conceded more than we should.

I seem to remeber a very promising young player called Sean Farrell who scored a hatrick against Liverpool. Unfortunately it was in a national 5 a side competition (which we won). When he made the first team in 1990/1 he played centre forward for the best part of a season but just couldn’t score. He moved to Fulham, who weren’t where they are now, where I believe his fortunes improved.

Ron Manager = PDW? Explain please, no comprendo.

  10. PDW generally talks sense. Ron so called Manager’s comments about the legend that was Gordon Turner are out of order. Gordon’s last match for us was in 1963/64, by when, understandably he was over the hill. For his name to appear on a blog entitled Worst Ever Luton Players is an insult to the memory of the greatest goalscorer we ever had.

Ron’s comments about Matthews, apart from being just plain wrong, also have no place here. Stanley came to Town with Stoke when past 50, tried a trick or two but was clearly past it and struggling. The crowd did not get on his back, rather they were delighted to see the great man in the flesh and applauded his efforts, weak as they were.

Freddie Jardine was an OK left back in a generally weak side. Ian Buxton was far from the worst at his time. Laurie Sheffield was much worse and Mike ‘Muscles’ Harrison played just about 90 minutes in his whole career with us.

  11. Fredirk Brintenfelder – That good I can’t remember how to spell his name. Think he was 6′ 5″ plus & Austrian – PLayed against Wycombe once I recall under Ricky Hill.

Andre Scarlett – Looked like Shaun Wright-Phillips & that’s were the comparisons end.

  12. Landry Zahana Oni, affectionately named Laundry Banana Pony – based on his playing ability was awful. Alan Kimble wasn’t much better but that Freidrich Breitenfelder was the absolute pits !

  14. For Ron Manager, I’m afraid you are wrong about Fred Jardine who was pretty much ever present in the 1967-68 promotion season. He deserves credit for that alone. For me, the worst were probably Peter “Perce” Spiring in the mid 70s, and Billy Kellock in the early 80s. I would have to agree that Robert Wilson, mentioned above by Blackpool Hatter, comes close. Also close, from a similar era, was Steve Elliot.

  15. Dear oh dear, mpb645 seems to be getting out of his pram a bit re my comments about Gordon Turner, so let me clarify. Let me firstly make it clear that in no way do I rate Gordon as Luton’s worst ever player – but this blog is largely talking about players that didn’t cut the mustard, and for the last few years of his career, GT didn’t. Players of his ilk (and Mathews) should have had the sense to exit with dignity. In their latter years, they did get some stick, fans could only see the picture as it was at the time. By the early sixties Gordon seemed to prefer shooting from a distance rather than mix it in the box, you could guarantee he’d hit the Woodbine advert at least once during the half he was kicking towards it, often more. I am well aware of Gordon’s goal scoring prowess in his earlier seasons. Unfortunately I wasn’t considered old enough to start going to games till the 59 cup run, which Gordon didn’t play much part in due to injury. I only wish I’d seen him a couple of years earlier, when he was at his best, rather than have to witness his decine (which sadly coincided with that of the club).

Re the legend that was Stanley Mathews, yes, we all curious to see him, but by then he was totally past it. From where I was watching, (the Oak Rd end) he certainly got some stick, (which I thought unnecessary).
For what it’s worth, I always thought Joe Payne was our most prolific goal scorer – if the war hadn’t intervened goodness knows what his total would have been.

I stick by my opinion that Fred Jardine was always a weak link in the team. His tackling ability was questionable, and his natural inclination was to put the ball out of play when remotely threatened.

Mike Harrison played left wing didn’t he? I remember him as being far too big to have any pace, but not for anything else. He was replaced by little Ray Whittaker I believe, who was quite nippy.

    Like

    • Wrong again Ron. Mike Harrison came after Ray Whittaker. He may not have been an improvement though – I can only remember him thundering down the wings and having thighs that Chris Hoy (and probably Roger Hoy) would be proud of.
